Educational Model
DTS’s educational model is composed of four major areas of study and formation.
To find out how many hours of training each degree has in these areas, please see the Degree Hours Breakdown.
1. Biblical Studies
The foundational concern of all courses and degree programs at DTS is to
ground students in the Scriptures so that they can become faithful communicators of the Gospel.
Each M.A. program covers all 66 books of the Bible in classes taught by the
Biblical Exposition Department. The Th.M. program goes even deeper by adding study of the
Greek (15 hours) and Hebrew (12 hours) exegesis.
2. Theological Understanding
Building upon a knowledge of Scripture, students are taught the historic
theological interpretation of Scriptures.
Both the MA and ThM programs have at least 18 hours of theological studies
including an entire semester on the doctrine of the Trinity. The ThM program adds additional coursework in church history.
3. Ministry Skills
Rooted in Scripture and theology, students are taught how to communicate
these truths in a loving way through various ministry skills.
Each MA program has a unique ministry skill emphasis such as Biblical Counseling, Cross-Cultural Ministry,
or Media and Communication. The ThM program deepens these skills by including additional upper level classes
in preaching, teaching, and church leadership.
4. Spiritual Life
Undergirding the biblical, theological, and practical courses is an emphasis on
spiritual formation because DTS believes that students will only be as effective in ministry as they are
deeply connected to God himself and to the community of faith.
All programs at DTS begin with a course on the spiritual life. The ThM program
and many MA programs also include a two year spiritual formation program where students encourage each
other to grow in Christ in the context of community.
